Clipped Wing 4 star60

Has anyone in the group flown this plane with a clipped wing (2 inner or outer bays removed)? The mod was written up in RC modeler but I would appreciate comments from anyone who has flown one and its effect on flight performance.

I did just that. I am not an expert flyer by any means but the airplane still is very easy to land minus 1 bay from each wing. It floats like a trainer but has a faster roll rate with the clipped wing. Easier to fit in the trunk too !

I did the clipped wing version. This was my 2nd kit and I had fun making mods but the plane is boring. Its a slow mover even with a 91 2 stroke

It wouldn't be boring if you tried new maneuvers you had never thought of before. See how small of an outside loop it will do. See if you can do a rolling circle. See how small of a flat turning circle you can do without it stalling into the middle. Tie a 50 foot crepe paper streamer to the tail and see if you can cut the end of it with the propeller. See how far it will tail slide (if you can do a tail slide--sometimes it's not easy!). See how steep of a nose high landing glideslope you can do without whacking it on the runway. Turn your aileron rate up to ridiculous and see how fast of a roll rate you can get at the slowest possible airspeed.

I had a Kadet trainer that was at least 20 years old at the field one day, and a friend who usually flies pattern planes took an interest in it because he had fond memories of the Kadet from years ago. He and I spent the next hour flying the AMA contest pattern with it. It was a hoot!

I have a 4Star 120 and after flying it for five years removed one aileron bay from each tip. This results in less "float" on landing, but didn't change anything else that I could tell. Removing the outer bays has become standard procedure in my club, regardless of the size of the 4 Star.

I'd flown my Hangar 9 trainer too many years, and was getting a little bored, so I added a huge half-moon to the 3/4 inch wide rudder ~ incredible difference ~ spins, snaps, slips, knife edge.......

I just built one with a bay removed from each wing. It rolls a bit faster but I don't notice any drastic changes in the way it flies. I also enlarged the rudder. Made it look like a cap or similar rudder. Quite a bit wider at the bottom. I also let off the canopy and rear stringers. Just a flat top all the way back. Didn't look too bad that way (IMP). I have pics if anyone is interested. These planes were not meant to go fast. Just meant to do slow, graceful aerobatics. You will enjoy it.

If you don't know whether to omit one bay or two, then why don't you split the difference and omit one rib bay on one side and two on the other?

That would probably put you into that roll once - on take off, unless you were VERY good with your ailerons. That extra lift will do that rollie thingie for you. You could try attaching your wing to the plane off center just to try it out for fun...lol Andy

We can make a box of wood.....FLY!!
