lots of info here
Here is one of Chuck Cunningham's classics on floats.

All the boys here on floats, put the step on the CG.
I've used the Chuck Cunningham criteria for years and it works. Look at Red's post.

Not to bad, considering Cunningham recommends 1/2" ahead of the CG. Of course where is the CG relative to the step if you take into consideration shift due to rotation it will move considerably in relation to the step?
Bottom line, if it lifts off properly it is in the right place. :-)

The CG should definately be in front of the step, otherwise the aircraft is very 'tipsy'......tends to fall back on the rear of the floats until you attain some speed. Also more unstable after getting on step. Just think 'tail heavy'.....thats the way if feels. I have experimented quite a bit with different setups and floats and if I had Chucks information back then it would have saved me much heartache.
Refer to Chuck Cunninghams drawings that Red posted the link to. You won't go wrong with these guidelines. I'm certainly no expert on float flying but after roughly 250-300 flights off water I can tell you that Chucks advice is very reliable.
I forgot to say this in my other post....... welcome , to the world of float flying. It's great. I don't have anything on floats at this time , but plan on returning to float fllying in the spring. BTW , what floats are you building ? One of the best ready built floats I have flown on a .40 size aircraft were made by EZ , the same people who have built ARF's for so long. I was flying them on a Midwest Aero Star 40. Had a barrell of fun with it. Good luck.
I am building from scratch and recollection of the Goldberg floats on an Anniversary Cub. Cut a profile from 1/8 lite ply and glued foam to both sides, shaped them up and glued thin ply to planing surfaces then fiberglassed everything. They are going onto a Type 224 Supermarine, the first Spitfire .It has an inverted gull wing and big fairings around a fixed gear and I think it will look great on floats altho the original never flew off water
For any assistance, email for full insurrections re Goldberg floats or refer to sub section "Floats and Skis" at Alan's Hobby, Model & RC Web Links
