Recovering with Plastics

I've acquired an ARF covered with Monokote and - for various reasons - want to pull the covering off and re-cover it with Ultracote.

Any comments/advice? TIA!

Use a heat gun to get the monokote off.

Don't worry overmuch about any bits and pieces that stick to the frame, especially if you're using the same colors to cover them.

Try teasing up a corner with an X-Acto knife, apply heat to the Monokote and start peeling. An iron would probably work to get it started, but once you have enough to get hold of without scorching your fingers, use a heat gun. BTW, set the gun on "low" if it's the hardware store variety. Most of them on "high" can put out air as hot as 900 degrees F., easily hot enough to melt Monokote and ignite balsa. You want to soften Monokote's hot-melt glue just enough for it to release from the surface. Also, I wouldn't get too excited over any scraps left over. Also, before you re-cover, check the wood for any spots where oil has seeped under the covering and remove it as best you can with K2R, kitty litter, heat gun and paper towels, or whatever de-oiling method works for you. After you've de-oiled your greasy spots, paint over them with something like Balsarite, clear dope, or other sealant so the Ultracote will stick.
