Are transmitter and receiver crystals different? can you only use 27mhz crystals in a 27mhz handset or can 35 or 40 mhz crystals be used?,

all different I am afraid and even different between different brands and models of receivers
AFAIK, has to do with the way the crystal is cut, electrical circuit behaviour differs. Always best to buy OEM crystals or ones known to be compatible. Couple bucks saved might not be worth it.
