Where did everbody go?

There used to be a heck of a lot more folks on this group than I see now. Granted I have not checked it out as much as I used to 'cause I've been fiddlin' around with C/L lately so I've been hangin' out on stukastuntworks and stunthanger lately. But I noticed that the number of posts per day seems to have dropped way off.

I think RC Universe sucked a lot of the life out of the newsgroup.

I was there for a long time, not visiting the newsgroup much, until I found out first hand about their "moderation". After having a post "edited" and another deleted, I have just about called it quits there. The site is a great source of information, but having some moderator on a power trip editing what I write is enough to make steam come out of my ears. I'm not the trouble-making type or name-caller, hot-head, etc.. and the "moderating" I'm talking about was completely inappropriate and uncalled for, in my opinion. And it was done without any warning and with no notification. That is a very big turn-off for me.

Viva les newsgroups! (pardon my French, if I was close enough to qualify)

I read both RCU and this place. I probably "contribute" more here than there.

On the other hand, I've never seen a "downwind turn" thread there. Maybe it's not so bad, after all..... ;-)

Well, I'm here, too...not necessarily do I comment on everything...but I read most of it...and I also read some of R/C Universe...at least the things that are in the interest areas that I relate to. And...Ihave been this year to Perry GA and a couple of area flea markets...I notice definitely fewer kits for sale and lots of arfs..used at good prices... Frank Schwarts AMA 123

You could have written your post to describe my experience. I have finally disabled my account on RCU.

If all the folks who are wronged at RCU come back, the newsgroup will be busy again....

I have thought the same. When I was on here years ago there were many more posters. Since I have only recently come back, it isn't my fault.

For real this time? Doesn't this make the 3rd or 4th time? :-) And are you really disabling your account when you come back under another name?

Hi Red

I had asked RCU to disable my account on a couple of occasions, which they refuesed to do. RCU has finally allowed a method to disable an account. It's in the profile. At least supposedly, it will not allow for other ID's. I did not want to come back the last time, but when members of my club ask me to respond to another member of the club, I had to eat crow about going back. Now I can't. Thank goodness. It's become more contentious than rec.models ever was, IMO, and the moderators are as described by others. Deleting a post is one thing, going in and changing my words is another.

Changing words where it's clear to all readers that they were changed by a moderator without permission of the author is merely despicable, while changing them without attribution ought to be a castration offense.

In either case, continuing to participate in a forum where either happens is giving positive reinforcement to the behavior of the moderators.

Now... if those here can just learn not to feed or fight with trolls, maybe rec.models will again become a viable source with more participants. Seems like there have always been a few here that just will not let the trolls go. That causes the discussion to go sideways and was the reason many of us left. The trolls were never as much of an issue as those that want to fight with them.

I'm puzzled. Can't you effectively disable your account by simply not going to that site any more?

Hard to do when asked by club members to view and interceed in a thread.

Let's take the gloves off on the way RCU operates. Red, please do not consider it an attack, but simply a statement of how things are with RCU.

There is a record on the internet fourms of one instance where I have said I was outraged and not only having my posts changed, but the content of an entire thread changed, and that I was not going back to RCU.

Red, the fact that I have had a running battle with Nathan (Plane Insane) and Marc (RCAdmin) through PMs and e-mails is not known, except to those on the RCU staff. Of course, you are a member of the private moderator's forum on RCU and have access to information most RCU members do not. So, here you are... an RCU moderator... or perhaps technically a wattflyer moderator... and using supposedly private information on the open internet, stating I have threatened more than once. I have no problem with that... truly I don't. However, it is typical of the way RCU and it's staff work. I would love to post some of those e-mails here, but it is not my style to disclose private communications without permission.

You may take exception to that. RCU moderators have, more than once, said 'lets keep communications between just us', then they get irate if I post something they said after telling me they have relayed my message to someone else. Hypocrisy?

Keep in mind that Marc created the AMA forum on RCU as a place for him to gripe about the AMA. Unless that too has been modified, his words are still in the AMA forum. He was upset that his future and current partner got a deal for RCO with the AMA without competitive bidding.

Now RCU gets a place on the front of the AMA website pointing to RCU's classified section. Total non dues revenue generated from the RCU classifieds link= $307 for the year... with no competitive bidding. Red, it's amazing how things change, isn't it?

Marc wanted to disassemble the AMA and turn it into an insurance company. Unless the forum has been modified, which it could have been the way RCU is now doing business, Marc's words are all there.

In the latest EC minutes is a deal for Sport Aviator to be promoted by RCU at no charge to the AMA. Have to wonder about that one. Red, why is the AMA taking a pittance for the exposure RCU gets from the AMA on the classifieds, without bidding and then RCU "gives" the AMA a freebie?

As far as alternate IDs, I have had some. One was a temp fix of an RCU issue, at least in my opinion. Dave Mathewson, who was running for AMA Pres at the time had a forum. His discussions were dropping off after

30 days. I sent PMs and e-mails pointing out the issue to RCU, but to no avail. I then created a second identity and bumped every post that had been made in Mathewson's forum, carefully leaving them in exactly the same order they had been, but giving all of them a fresh 30 days. Virtually as soon as I finished, I sent to you, Red, an e-mail telling you what I had done and why. Several days later RCU finally fixed the problem. Since it was an election, I felt time was of the essence. Never have tried that ID again, but I assume it was disabled.

The more recent identity I created is somewhat more embarrassing for me to discuss... nevertheless. Someone created a thread in the clubhouse on RCU where he was, in my estimation, being attacked by hypocrites. I made about 10 posts, first baiting them, then exposing them as the hypocrites I felt they are. I left, never using the ID again. Several days later, a moderator wrote me a nasty gram about it. Some, that saw the thread, will understand. I could not have done that under my normal ID because of who the thread creator was.

I think there was one other ID, and I can not recall what it was or why. About 3 years or so ago.

Believe me, when the opportunity to disable my account came along, there was absolutely no hesitation to disable it. Just to be clear, to the best of my knowledge, Red, you have never moderated one of my posts.

Marc has proved he is capable of posting on rec.models . Red, why not suggest that he come out and represent RCU himself? I am sure several here would love to have a discussion with him. I have mine all the time, but others might enjoy the opportunity.

Say, Red, it seems to me you made a post, some time back, in the RCU AMA forum saying you were not going to post there again, yet, you still post on occasion. Why is that?
