Coal and coke - whether to wash / sieve ?

Nov 28, 2003 0 Replies

Assuming a duck's nest hearth burning coke, do many smiths bother to sieve or wash their coke to remove the fines ? Last time I was using a coke hearth it was full of very dusty coke and I had a lot of trouble with clinker.

From what I've heard, coke is rare in the USA and solid fuel means coal. Is coal any better for clinkering from dust ?
