Bolts Show Torque by Color

To All:

I thought this was interesting:

The HR (High Resolution) SmartBolt?s indicator, located in the center of the bolt head, remains yellow as the fastener elongates. When the design tension reaches approximately 85%, the indicator rapidly turns bright green. If the bolt is tightened beyond specifications, the indicator darkens until it is almost black. Should the bolt loosen more than 10 to 15%, the indicator returns to bright yellow, warning observers of a problem. ==============================================================

Looks pretty cool, Bob. The picture actually looks like the guy may be tightening some sort of fixture on a VMC table?

I followed the

link in the story, and it takes me to a spam site. No smart bolts to be found.

If those were reasonably priced, I'd certainly consider using them on fixtures for machining. Pretty easy indicator for the operator to know whether or not he tightened everything up. (Actually, now that I think of it, I don't think I tighten _any_ bolts on any of my fixtures to their "design tension" during regular unloading and loading, so maybe that wouldn't work.
