On Topic - Doosan (Daewoo) closes up shop

Apr 06, 2009 10 Replies

Doosan closed the DIA Engineering Center in Plymouth, MI last week and let all of the employees go. This group was responsible for all of the turnkey systems in N. America.

I am fairly certain that they've also closed their Western Technical Center in Orange, CA, and possibly their office in Memphis, TN as well.

We can only hope that this is not the harbinger of things to come for the machine tool industry in N. America.

Hope all you want Paul but it is for the time being. AMTBA reported a total of just over 650 machine tools sold in N. America in February. That's about what HAAS builds, or can build, in a single week in Oxnard IIRC.

John,

It never hurts to hope & pray, right? My understanding is that Doosan hadn't sold one machine this year in the U.S.. Forget the fact that we're ( in conjunction w/Doosan) still installing a $3.5M system in Mexico, with the promise of more to come.

I suppose not, as long as that's not the end of the effort.

I can easily believe that and wouldn't be surprised to see them go three full quarters before they do. They will have a lot of company.

How would you like to have a $3.5M invested smack in the middle of a drug war? LOL

Good luck Paul. Sincerely.

JC

I got a flyer today from pmi-auction.com. Fadal in Chatsworth is having a sale on the 23rd to sell "assets no longer needed in the continuing operations". What will be left in the building afterwards???

Unfortunately..for the foreseeable future..it is.

Westec...I saw it last Wed.

500 displays..about 10% were "efficency" companies Several of the big players didnt even show up Most of the big players had huge displays..and help that was desperate to talk to anyone.

It was on (1) floor, and in one room. First time Ive ever seen it that small.

Middle of the day..and most of the displays were looking helpless.

Not good..not good at all....

If you are in the business of selling ads, why antagonize your main source of revenue and if you depend on the politicians for favors [see FCC rulings in Wiki articles] why antagonize them?

Note that Murdoch is also the big Kahuna of Faux News.

Daewoo made some decent rifles and pistols.
