Yo...Mastercammers!!!!

Help an idiot out...

I'm using x4mu3 and im cutting a solid. Simple cut...it's a square block with some crap sticking up in the middle. So I use the outer boundry as a pocket boundry and select the model...leaving .02 per side. I'm using cut depths to control the depth.

Simple enough.

Problem is it leaves .020/side...all over....including the floor. I don't want .020 on the floor, I want zero.

Any way I can control the floor versus the walls when machining a solid??

PS: No shortcuts please, Iv'e been making it work too long doing tricks, this has got to be extremely common and there should be a simple way.

Thanx in advance.

Don't be so harsh on yourself , this is a condition that's curable .

I have to hope for myself too

you have to separate your selection from the whole solid to part of the solid how to do this , ACTIVATE SOLID SELECTION next toggle SELECT FACE un toggle SELECT BODY

select the part on the solid you want with .020 stand off . you will note its high light as an separate entity(s) . if you do this wrong like not toggling SELECT FACE on and un toggling select body

the whole solid will be selected. after the sections you want is correctly selected hit the green button to end selection , next i suggest you select a check surface. say the flat base of the solid . you will have to go thru the selection mask of well SELECT FACE like above . now when you set your cut parameters you can choose 0.0 stand off or whatever for the bottom check surface .

this advice is worth exactly what you pay for 00.000

good luck

THAnK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!! I love this newsgroup!!!! I can always get a quick kickass answer to any machining question.

The best stuff in life is free! This is proof, thanx again.

Use the high speed toolpaths. The amount of stock to leave on walls and floors can be set differently.

It's also a great place to get bogus information and wasteful work arounds.

I did just what you said exactly. It highlighted good, hit the green ok button, number of selected surfs never changed. I ended up iges out the damn thing, and bringing it back in and regenerating. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Yah, I was thinking about that...after I was done. High speed toolpaths, dynamic pockets...hmmmm, maybe that's what I should be using. I forgot that stuff was even there. That's the problem of using 2 different systems, you keep running one like the other, and vice versa. Cam systems are not like machines. The more machines you run the better you get in general. But seems the more cam systems you run, the shallower you seem to dig into each one. That's why I keep coming back to mastercam, it's in every shop almost, I would love to use just one system from now on, but damn, this one is good at this, that one is good at that etc...

ok it works for you, basicaly like driving a car with a bad or semi slipping clutch. You made it work. It gets you from point A to B & gets halfway decent mileage. You know damn well what you have after exposure to UG & now Cimatron, just out of your grasp.

********* Problem is I need mastercam for lathe. Switching back and forth from x to cimatron is making me go nuts. I'm tempted to just use mastercam so at least i can focus on one, as opposed to blurring on two.
