A question about Volts and Amps

I apologize if this is the wrong group for this, but I've got a question about some chargers I have and I don't really understand this type of thing well enought to know for sure. I have a couple of tools (A phone and a GPS receiver) that charge over USB with one of those 5 pin mini-USB plugs. The GPS came with a car charger that accepts a standard male USB cable to 5 pin cable. The car charger says Output



5Vdc,850mA The AC adapter for my phone (the cord on this ends in a 5 pin mini-USB) says Output 5.0V, 550mA. If I were to use the GPS car charger and cable to charge the phone would that work?

Nate, You might be alright, than again it is not my gear. The only problem that could arise, could be if the battery on the GPS was low and did actually draw more than the 550mA. Doubtful that it will draw more, and manufactures normally overate these things. 10% is a normal overate but that might be more due to sourcing, pricing etc...

If it were mine I would do it. Is it worth the savings of buying a new adapter, only you can make that call.

Wait a minute, I think I read wrong... You want to use the 850mA cable to charge the phone which has a 550mA cable? If this is the case than I have it backwards above, and you should be fine.

In most cases this should work. The milliamps is just the available current level. But some possible issues exist with the ability to regulate the voltage. The 850 mA charger may go to a higher voltage if less than the full current is used, causing excess current (between

550 mA and 850 mA in the phone, and possibly damage the battery or the phone. If I were contemplating doing this< I would check the voltage output of the intended power source over a range of currents, or at least the expected usage current of the device I was planning to use with it.

And of course be sure the polarity is right. I've seen reversed usage in the same type of connectors.
