Voltage Adaptors & Sensitive Comps.

Not sure what group to post this to; sorry it's a novice question.

I want to use one of the USB to IDE adapters, but I will be travelling so I will need to convert European and/or other outlet voltages to 110 for the input to the usb adapters power supply. My question is are these

220/110 V converters precise enough to not effect the hard drive's operation. IOW are they safe to use if the specs bring the voltage down to USA standards? Or will small voltage or other discrepancies be passed on to the final target drive? What, if anything, do I have to be careful of here?

I bet it is easier to just find dual voltage adapters. Most PC stuff is made for the international market. PCs arent really that sensitive anyway

Actually it's not easier, most of the adapters do not have dual voltage power supplies.

Is it a separate supply or integrated into the product.

You know best!!

The second one I found on the net had a universal 110-250 volt supply.

So you will have to provide more information or accept the advice you were freely given.

Yep, I have several of these IDE USB adaptors - they are handy at getting a backup of a hard drive on an unknown system before booting off the drive. Which could do anything..

The particular one I am looking at has a brick made by Eng Electronics Co Ltd, China (where else?) rated 100 -240v 50 - 60 Hz. It has outputs of 1.5A at 12 and 5 volts.

If this is of any use, I have just stuck it on a variac supply, to see what results are achieved:

Loading it lightly (100mA, each channel), the output varies less than

100mV between 100 to 250 on a Variac input.

Fully loading it, the output varies less than 50mV over the voltage range 100 - 180 v, then drops by 40mV, which stays about constant up to full input voltage.

Undoubtedly a SMPSU. Possibly with some sort of voltage doubler that is disabled at higher input voltages?

So,for the OP, no worries!.

Thanks to UTF for the specific referral. I looked at 4-5 of these things and none said they had variable ps. One made by Maplin out of UK did, but they would not answer their emails. To John's remarks above, do you have a url for the ones you found? I have to buy a separate adapter anyways for other devices, so I guess I'll just take a vom with me and test it with that.

As Sue said the newer switchmode power supplies are quite well regulated, it is just a matter of choosing the output voltage and current you need.

I have just been round the world and only took my camera and a Palm Zire

31 and a multivolt supply for each, as their input is different, and a selection of plug adapters to go in whatever wall socket I got to. Worked great in USA and UK and I am from Aus.

What do you intend taking maybe we could tell you more.
