What size gen for 5hp submersible pump

Dec 06, 2003 2 Replies

A friend tried to run their 5 hp submersible pump set at 340 feet, with an

8,000 watt generator. He said it barely pumped. Now it is popping the main overload in the control box. The running amps are a bit high but with in max amp limits. Did they damage the pump or cable? RO

A 5hp FLC @ 115v single phase is 56a. If the pump is 230v single phase the FLC is 28a. 8000w/230v is 34.7a. Your generator is TOO small.

Don?t forget the motor starting current and the cable losses, too.
