Just an inspired guess but LEgo do frequently "retire" sets which means they disappear from their website. I am pretty sure this one is the real thing (a) because I was going to buy one like it a few years back but never got round to it and (b) the pictures shown on ebay are stock pictures from amazon.com and I can't imagine them selling fakes.

Also, you can wait for hell to freeze over before Amazon will deliver anything described as "unavailable" - look somewhere else.
According to Peeron, it is a real set.
