Help!!! Easiest way of getting into my strongbox.

Hi.. I have a metal STRONGBOX that I got at WalMart a few years back for about $20 and have lost the key(s) to it. It has many important documents inside including a little cash etc....

Is there an easy way for someone like me to bust the lock and get into this thing? I am not concerned about destroying it as long as the contents remain intact.

It is made of steel and is supposedly fireproof but I have no idea how well the unit is actually constructed.

I just want a few ideas on how I can get into this thing without having to visit a locksmith because right now my funds are a little challenged.... lol

Thanks

LEESA (I)

PS: In a perfect world, something even I could do without having to get someone to help me..... lol

If this is like most, it's a simple lock -- quick and easy job for a locksmith. Take it in and ask for a quote.

If the price still scares you off, feel free to bash and hack at the thing until you get it open, but don't expect to get advice on how to defeat locks here. See the FAQ for reasons why not.

We don't give out unlocking instructions on a public forum. That would be very dishonorable.

As to getting advice from me, you're on your own.

When you start whacking your strongbox with that sledge hammer, remember that whatever force you strike the box with goes through everything in it. If there's one piece of metal in the box it can shred the papers.

If the manufacture is local to your area, take it there and they should be able to sell you a key. Take the box to a locksmith as it probably won't cost as much as you think. All the low cost strongboxes I've worked on can be picked easily or opened by making an original key by various methods. Around here it's $10-20 in the shop.

Leesa, There is probably a way you could pry it open, but I can't see it for one thing and for another, I don't discuss defeating. Those little boxes are no big job.I've done alot of them.

10-25$ is a usual price for bring ins.
