except GM 10, only ign = SB most ign, without looking in the book and this does NOT apply to GM 'foreign'-the Geo family

Yes.

You need to invest in some reference material, like autosmart or similar.

GM used them from 1936 to 1967 (more or less) with four depths. From 1967 (was it 69?) they went to 5 depths.

The double sided GM uses wafers in the door, not sure about the ignition.

Ford used sidebar starting in 1984 1/2 model year, only in the ignition. This is the "ten cut" system. The doors were ordinary wafer locks, and I'm fairly sure the trunks were the old 5 pin tumbler. I'm not sure about later models of Ford. They came out with an 8 cut system, adn I'm not familiar with that.

Yes it has a side bar, and could also have a special side bar that if forced will not trigger a sensor to allow the car to start. Rather pricy.

Yes on most 8 cut ignitions they have a side bar.

Also Chyrslers starting in 98 have side bars in the ignition and newer Saturns have sidebars all the way around.

Do not replace the ford focus ignition with the replacment sidebar ignition, unless you want to be recalled within a year. It WILL fail again. Only use the NON sidebar ignition if you want to do it right. And remember this, because this is a time consumer if you don't know, (doesnt come with instructions). The cylinder for the NON sidebar ign goes in through the BACK of the housing.

Make sure you use the cresent moon shaped dust cover, snap on the plastic holding bracket and place the facecap on...Then slide the cyl in through the BACK, you'll see that a special groove allows this to work. The '00 Ford Focus seems to be a monthly service call, and we keep a switch in stock just for them.

use the NEW revision B they just came out with.. its REPINNABLE, and NO side bar, assembles through the FRONT, too

how can you tell ? the key hole is in the CENTER of the lock, and its got a face cap ring that is visible from the front, separate from the key plug. the OLD style had a large VISIBLE diameter lock plug, whereas the NEW style visible plug is a lot smaller diameter- half of the size is taken up with face cap --Shiva--

I just rekeyed one of those yesterday for a body shop I do coding of new locks for. I noticed the difference but didn't think much of it (I don't keep up with automotive articles in the mags anymore).

I staked the cap on for them. Hope I didn't screw them up. :o

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll print out your post and give it to them.

the NEW version has to have the cap staked on, this makes it easier to get off if need be, and salvageable IF that need arises..

well maybe if you weren't wasting your time "praying" you could keep up to speed on your trade.

Two hands working can do more than a thousand clasped in prayer.

and how do you know I'm not god trying to help you?

I have no real need to "keep up to speed" on car work. I hardly do any these days. Pay attention, bill.

And, truth be told, I don't spend anywhere near as much time in prayer as I should.

Because I know him personally.

Now, how do _you_ know God's not trying to reach you through _me_? :)

BTW folks - I know Bill's trolling but I find him to be a challenge. At least he's not being a jerk about it.

Granted, but I still wish the two of you would take it to e-mail. Among other things, conducting this sort of discussion in public generally leads to a significant amount of "playing to the audience" rather than actually talking or listening to each other.

Sorry Joe. I forgot to and "OT" to the subject line so those who weren't interested could pass it by.

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm specifically responding to and addressing Bill. If he wants to go private I will certainly welcome it.

the new version also doesn't need to be in the on position to be removed. The detent pin can be depressed in any mode.
