Toolboxes vs. ammo boxes

I went to Home depot to get a toolbox that I could use to keep my various tools organized. They mostly had "one box with tray" models, but I grabbed a black and decker "smalls parts" box for $10US that seems OK, but it's all plastic.

I've been allergic to plastic boxes since having one break snap apart on a muddy trail dumping all my tools in the mud.

Am I better off just hitting the next gun show for some ammo boxes or is there a good metal box out there that will keep my tools accessible and clean?

There are good plastic boxes and bad ones. If you get a good one, don't massively overload it, and keep an eye on it for wear, I don't think it's much more risk than that a metal one will rust out unexpectedly.

I've become fond of tackle boxes. Lots of useful-sized small compartments, plus a main compartment that can hold bigger tools such as vises and chisels and such. If you really can't stand the idea, small plastic compartmented boxes to go _into_ the bigger box area good thing.

I bought a fishing tackle box (Plano, I think) after someone suggested it to me. I've been nothing but satisfied with it. It has five drawers with seperate compartments that I can keep my picks, shims, followers, jewlers screwdrivers, etc. Then, as you described, larger screwdrivers, ice pick, pick gun, etc, etc.

Turned out to be an ideal solution. It seems to be holding up better than my "Huskey" metal tool box, and it's much more portable.

I tried the Ammo Boxes and found I couldn't keep my tools organized. All the smaller items always worked their way to the bottom and I had a hard time finding what I was looking for without dumping the box. The fishing tackle box idea worked well for me. Also, they seem to be pretty sturdy.

TF:

Toolboxes are a matter of personal preference...

Others here have said that while any toolbox can break as time passes you have to keep an eye out for wear and not overload it...

My personal choice for a 'toolbox' is a five gallon plastic bucket with one of those 'bucket buddies' tool holders wrapped around the outside of it... I have several small organizer boxes (the type from a craft store that are marketed as an 'embroidery floss organizer') that fit inside the bucket to carry items as needed... Special tools are in zippered canvas pouches that are again carried around inside the bucket as needed... This is due to the fact that I am a 'multi-purpose' employee and can work doing any number of jobs during the course of a day and I am not the kind of person who wishes to be a rolling maintenance shop equipped with every tool in the place... Besides extra tools are too heavy to carry around when you don't need them...

You have to experiment with things until you find a "tool transportation and storage system" that you like..
