The commercially available key cabinets are not really designed for holding

As far as the aesthetics issue there is no accounting for taste. If a rectangular box in a neutral color doesn't fit your sense of style by all means design your own.

A little pointer on design I find helpful is to assume that in the future you might have more than 90 hooks, and more than 10 keys per hook.

Another idea is to make yourself modular boxes that will fit in a standard filing cabinet. Or perhaps you can start with a bathroom medicine cabinet that you can set in the wall and either adorn the mirror to look like something other than a medicine cabinet. One word of caution here is to remember that 900 keys and 90 key chains is going to be a lot of weight. Any cabinet you design or modify will have to be able to support this weight.

silly thought... its in a specialized area, so i do NOT know how they do it.. but PRISON guards, have to 'check in' their key ring before going home..so I was told by 3 guards at the Fed prison that is 15 miles from me.. so SOMEHOW they store those rings till the person comes back their next work shift.. and there is in some cases, far more than 10 keys on those rings.. might do some digging as to how they do it.. --Shiva--

I cannot remember which site the info came from, but in a prison key cabinet the columns of hooks are numbered and the rows lettered. A tag on each ring has the cabinet location eg B6 and the number of keys on the ring, which is welded to prevent individual keys being removed. In addition to the routine rings, additional rings are held for issue in emergencies.

talked to my friend guard today.. they have a ROOM, just as you describe.. with hooks hanging ever so many inches along the wall.. SO..

suggestion is to take a closet and reinforce the walls and change out the door?

Sounds like that at a power utility I used to work for. Many older houses have the meters inside which was OK when the wife did not go out to work. Customers then gave them keys for meter reader access and they ended up with a big bunch of keys for each meter reader for each day of the two monthly reading cycle. It was a full time job for one person looking after the keys. The keys were labelled with round sequence numbers so they were useless without the readings book.
