Evolved 2d pin-jointed truss.

Right, I'm trying to evolve a 2D pin-jointed truss using genetic algorithms...



So far I've written a program that and can analyse a truss to find the forces in the members (see attachment - colour indicates compression/tension, thickness represents force magnitude)...



Has anyone done this before? How could I generate the truss from a bitstring? I've had some ideas, but they were mostly not very good. Also, what would be a good method of evaluating the trusses fitness...

There is a program called MDSolids that analyzes trusses, determinate beams columns, and more.

As a figure of merit for trusses of a given length, you might consider total distributed load weight / truss total weight.

Hmmm... yeesss... Perhaps I could have a

double MemberCost(double AxialForce);

type function. That way I could model tensile members being cheaper and so on.
