Decent enough rifle. Expect about 2" 100 yrd groups...1.5MOA, might do better with some tuned handloads.

Fast shooter, tends to need cleaning and maintainence pretty regularly. Great deer/coyote gun. Not for long range shooting.

Of course..it can be pimped and fixed up a bit....

Damn, that looks like the 742. Biggest POS I've ever seen. On sight end days at our gun club those things were the #1 problem child. UGH!

The main flaw of the whole 740/742/7400 series was that the receivers aren't designed for heavy use. They're for sighting in and getting your deer, then back in the closet till next year. The milled slots that the bolt travels in wear and get sloppy, then the bolt doesn't cycle properly. I've talked to a few gunsmiths about this and the only repair is to replace the receiver.

According to a post on one of the gunsmithing boards, this shop has developed a weld-up and remachine procedure to repair worn out 742 receivers.
