Arter gloat!

There IS a GOD, and He loves me!!! Just started to look for an Arter grinder to do my circular knives and yesterday called McKean Used Machinery here in Cleveland. ( mckeanmachinery.com )He didn't have one but called me this morning with a phone number for a guy that wants to sell one, a 12". He said he'd be thrilled to get $1k!!! Said his father died and was liquidating his shop. Unlike Gunner, I need this tool. Anybody need some rotary angle grinding done?

How does one know if one needs "rotary angle grinding" done?

I need the Arter to grind my wire cutter blades. They are 9" OD and start out at 7/8" thick D-2. Two of them are mounted on 4" OD shafts and the blades overlap by 1/4" in shear. I use them to cut steel wire in bundles about 3/4" thick. The blades have a 1 degree taper grind to them so they are thicker on the OD than at the ID. This improves the shearing action. Flat ground blades work for a day or so while the angle ground blades last for weeks. The Arter rotates the blade horizontally and the grinding head is on a boom that comes in radially. The table can be tilted to grind the taper. There, clear as mud!

Sounds like that Arter grinder would make one stomp-ass parabolic mirror grinder (at least for roughing one out).

Slitting saw blades are ground just as your wire cutting blades; thinner toward the center, to provide clearance to prevent binding, and I suspect, to admit cutting lube.

No thanks. I'm in the process of getting my newly acquired Blanchard grinder set up and ready to go.

Congrats on the Blanchard! I've never run one, will it do tapers?

Thanks You can adjust the column to tilt, but it is best to just leave it square. There are some ones with factory tilting heads on them. I got it to sharpen my punch press tooling and for making fixtures and such. My concerns are flat square and parallel. I have fixtures to set on the chuck for grinding my shear angles.

You got the right machine for doing the round knives and angle work. I know you will enjoy it and get good use out of it.
