Well ... based on my 12x24" Clausing which has such a gear, it is found under the gear cover at the left end. On mine, there is a knurled shaft sticking out through a hole in the cover, and you grip that knurled shaft and either pull it (for "out") or push it (for "in"). You may have to rotate the spindle a little to get the teeth to line up for the last fraction of sliding gear travel.

And -- you have to have it in the "in" position to allow the gear cover on the left hand end to swing open or closed. In the "out" position, you would need to enlarge the hole though which it projects.

It may be that there is no such fitting on the lathe for which you downloaded the manual.

You may be able to get a manual for it from Clausing Service Center -- since they are a surviving part of Atlas. Call:

and be prepared with your lathe's model number and serial number and they can put together a photocopied matching manual for you for a nominal fee. (They also stock quite a few of the parts for these old machines.)

Don; Thanks for the reply - good to know. It appears I would have to 'unbolt' I think- to activate this gear. There is not just a simple lever.

I downloaded the manual to which someone else posted a link.

I see how different your sliding gear is from mine.

Mine has two gears of different numbers of teeth on the same hub, and as it slides, it selects meshing with one or another gear in another two-gear stack, while the larger diameter gear on the sliding gear maintains mesh with an extra-wide gear which feeds into the quick-change gearbox.

So -- all you have to do is stop the spindle and slide the gear to the proper position.

With yours, I believe that you have to loosen the quadrant lock screw, rotate the quadrant out of mesh, slide the gear, and rotate the quadrant back into mesh with the other gear pair.

But -- yours doesn't have to have a hole through the gearbox cover to accommodate the sliding gear handle.

I note also that yours is missing one column from the threads selection -- the one which gives 27 TPI. The other threads that it gives (in combination with other parts of the gearbox train) are:

6.75 13.5 *27* 54 108 216

Another difference is that yours has two tumblers, while mine has a rotating paddle on top of the gearbox which selects three different ratios elsewhere in the geartrain. I suspect that, exclusive of the lack of the 27 TPI group, yours has about the same number of threads possible as mine.
