Clausing drill press update

We got our Clausing Variable speed head mated to the Buffalo pedestal by cutting off a piece of the 3" dia. short post that came with the table mount Clausing head and bored it to 2-3/4" and saw-cut to make a bushing split on one side. (Gunner's idea) It's perfectly square and works great! It was worth the time to put a reverse switch and a connector for a future foot pedal. At 1 hp, this thing doesn't stall, doesn't make noise, and doesn't vibrate. While we had the table off, we removed a little ridge in the casting around the post that was raised a bit above the table level...why did they do that? We couldn't let the vise rest against the post. The only problem we all seem to have is translating what speed to use for a bit size. It was intuitive to set the old belt step pulley. What a machine! And, only $200! Next time somebody asks what is the most important machine in a shop, try going without a drill press for a few days.

It all depends on your perspective. We used to rough drill holes in a big drill press to lighten the load on the daewoo 6hs lathe. With the Haas 8inch and carbide insert drills, that #5 mt drill press has not been turned on even once.

We also have a nifty Japanese tapping drill press. Since we got the Haas VF1 with rigid tapping, same story. Not that it is retired, but for the bulk of our production tapping, the need is not as great.

We Have a nice little jet that we use for tapping thousands of 0-80 holes. I'm working on a solution to that, as well :)

Once you've owned a Bridgeport mill or similar, you'll find the drillpress doesn't get the attention it used to.

We had to use the BP as a drill press for a few days and it works fine but it's inconvenient being 40' from the center of the machine shop. I did this because I wanted lots of space around a brand new PB so it would be organized.

Ive got two more Buffalos sitting out back, looking for good homes.

Btw...did you get the music file I sent you?

Chuckle..Ill see what I can do.

A friend of mine and his sister run a small herd of buffalos and Beefalos out in Oklahoma, when they come through..they like to lay some surplus jerky on me. Last time was about 30 lbs.

Next trip they are bringing me a couple or 3 buffalo hides. Its gonna be some work tanning and whatnot..but it will be fun to make mt. man gear out if em. I told em I wanted winter hides.

Can I get you to meaty-a mail some to me next time? Sounds good. I've been finding good jerky here at BiMart on sale for $8/lb a few times a year so I stock up. The YFs (yuckin' fuppies) are paying $28/lb for organic, free-range jerky.

Yeah, you'll really need them there in CALIFORNIA in the DESERT.

It gets pretty damn cold in the winter in the desert, not quite Rocky Mountain winter cold or Buffalo New York winter cold, but it does get cold.

It was a joke between Gunner and me. It was 109F in the shade the weekend I was there. We sweated buckets.

Well, YES I did! I was going to play it on the PA for a few hours but my sister wouldn't let me...Bitch!

I need some more linear trucks and rails, anything for sale? We're building ANOTHER flat wire machine, and then another! That bitch sister of mine keeps selling all our capacity and makes me work 4 hours a day OT and 6 on Saturday.

Freight on the Buffs would kill me!

Why did Gunner request the hides to be anatomically correct females?

I hesitate to ask, (I just KNOW I'm gonna regret this) but...

There are certain things on my Playlist that I won't inflict on unsuspecting people: P.D.Q. Bach, Weird Al Yankovic, Off Kilter...

Two things: Tell her that until you catch up on the back-orders and get another machine ready SHE just volunteered to join you for a few second shifts in the plant.

Show her how to run the machine, and tell her you'll be nearby - "Just feed the blanks in here, and watch to make sure the wire reels don't run out and they come out the other end right. And do NOT put your hands here --> or here

I use it for stress relief. When they hear the bagpipes coming from the computer room, with a snicky snick as the broad sword comes out of its sheath..they make a wide berth around the area.

Okay, so I'm late and catching up, but Gunner wrote on Sat, 17 Feb 2007 23:54:39 GMT in rec.crafts.metalworking :

Just one question: when Larry was there, and it was 109 in the shade, did you spend much time in the shade?

I ask, because many moons ago, during high school, I spent many a day at the pool when it was 106 in the shade, but that was okay, because we were not in the shade.

Ah..no. Twernt much shade then. Here in the desert..critters will fight each other for the shelter of a blade of grass..and some will chase the shadow of a passing cloud for miles and miles.

No pool here. Just a pool of sweat most of the time. Or bundled up like it was -40 when the winter fog is in.

I was in Egypt back in 77 and it was hot. {"How Hot Was it?" So hot the native were complaining about the heat wave!} I didn't get further up the Nile, but that's where it was hottest. And friends who made that trek reported that a tourist bus does cast enough shade, even at high noon. Not much shade, but enough to mostly get out of the sun.

What's the old line, "hotter than the hinges of Hell with the blowers on"? {One condemned soul to another, "What I really hate is how he keeps saying 'But it's a dry heat...'!"}
