Man, I got oil coming out of my ears: Vactra #2, gallons of Kroil, PB Blaster, Marvel Mystery Oil, the famous and nearly useless WD-40, some old lock-ease (graphite suspension), and some used compressor oil ( which looks like LockEase, that I'm tempted to use), motor oil, gear head oil, some old lube oil from a surface grinder, etc..
So, some time ago, I met a gent who would mix his own oil concoction, mostly Vactra #2 and marvel mystery oil, and for the gear head, Moto 32 + marvel.
But since I got all this other stuff lying around, I do a mix of approx. 50 way lube, 30 Marvel, 10 Kroil, 10 PB Blaster, and use that to spritz around lathe ways, vise ways, and into the lube ball detents. With some old lock ease.
Makes me feel like effing Michael Faraday....
I use this mix with Kroil/PB Blaster on manual way stuff partially for some anti-corrosion, which I don't know if this really works. I hesitate to use Kroil/Blaster in things with seals, as these oils may have a bit of a chemical "bite", what with being penetrants'n'all. I notice, for example, that spray bottles don't seem to stand up to kroil/blaster. Thus, in the Fadal, it's strictly Vactra #2.
Any do's/don'ts with oil mixes? Is Marvel in gear head oil a good idea? Is old way-lube type stuff (like from surface grinder resevoirs) re-usable? Is used compressor oil good for anything? Certainly "feels" OK....
Strauss auto stores have a display of some oil or additive (Lucas, iirc??) that shows how this stuff really sticks to nylon gears way above the sump.... very impressive. Don't know if this is significant or a parlour trick, but it looks neat.
