Attach a small precision parallel bar to a regular micrometer and you would have a similar but cheaper thing.

Just hold it against one side of the screw. Of course, one of the sellinbg points of the REAL mike is that the readings are corrected for the thickness of the bar.
If you have a depth mike, you could read the depth of the thread, and then do a little math.
============= There's always cheaper alternatives. The problem is that these tend to be less accurate and more awkward/inconvieient.

should do what you want. The down side is that you will need three hands, and the measurement wont be direct, so you will have to calculate. You pays your money and takes your choice.
Unless this will be a regular thing, I think I would go with the anvil set and tool bit. Enco also has a good deal on the mechanical digital mics if you need a larger one. see

Use a piece of ground flat tool steel and a micrometer. Get a piece at least wider than half the diameter of the largest screw you want to measure. Just lay the screw on a table, set the bar on edge so it spans two flights, and measure. That's the method I use to measure wear on the screws in the extruders at work, no problems.

Lay the workpeice on the surface-plate and measure with the height gage.

Make your own C frame and add a micrometer head.

Fit the spindle of a micrometer with a disk at least as wide as two threads and place the anvil on the thread to be measured.

Make one out of a micrometer head and a self-made frame. Most any OEM sells just heads for incorporation into specialty measuring jigs, looks like this qualifies. Or find a donor mike in a pawn shop, saw off the head and make one up to suit. Biggest problem I see is getting that bar to be exactly 90 degrees to the spindle axis. Or you can get a precision ground flat and use that with a regular mike. Rig up some sort of holder. If you use an electronic mike with it, just zero it out and go from there. A lot depends on how close you want to measure, thousandths would be fairly easy with a hand held flat, tenths would probably need something else done with it. Personally, I'd be inclined to go with a bigger mike and use a V-block for an anvil, just to detect lobes on the finished product, if I were making something up. You'd need a gauge pin or check disk for calibration, though.

Made a few of these years ago, when I didn't have the money, but did have the need.
Take a mic and drive the anvil out of it. Decide what size guage block you want to use. Take a combination of that thickness from both the anvil AND the mic's body where the anvil installs. I did this by setting the mic up on a surface grinder and side wheeling that area. Once you've achieved that, silver solder the anvil and guage block together. Go back and grind the assembled new anvil to insure it is flat and true. Press the new anvil back into the mic's body. Adjust for the new zero. Use.
My old mentor was wonderful about having me make tools when we needed them. I have a whole drawer of micrometers that have been altered. I used to surf the pawn shops just for donors for the purpose.

Why not make a T like that and convert a Mic into one - you will have to have it seat neatly and the face polished - and square ?! - Maybe you need only
4-pitch not the 20x pitch length.Install - run the mic down to it and measure what the value a zero is.
I think I'd find a 2" mic or more that you can let hang around like that.
Just remember to 'Tare' out the zero number from the measurement.
If you work for a big company - great time to request the cal lab to make it.

how about an interchangeable anvil mike something like this

and the get your rectagular bar that you can make or obtain, ream a hole in the middle, and press in a threaded pin that you can make, and attach to the mike body. calibrate as necessary.
