Hitch Receiver extension DIY ?

I don't believe this is a standard size. If it is, I'd love to find that out. The way I've seen people make these is to clamp pieces around your 2" square tube, using shims on 2 sides (maybe .015" shims) and weld it up with the tube still clamped inside, then press out the tube using a hydraulic press and remove the shims. That gets you a nicely square tube of the right size within .010" or so and you need a little slop, right?

There really isn't a standard square tube size that works right. Standard tube is measured on the outside, not inside.

For the hitch that fits inside the reciever, just use any 2x2 tube in .120", .180", or .250" wall depending on your load.

Just go to most anay place that caters to the travel trailer crowd, they sell this tube in 10, 12 16 and 24 inch lengths. It cost me $12.50 for an 16" piece last year. I also stumbled on some tube that fit the outside of this to form a reinforcing ring in the scrap yard. so don';t forget if your gonna have much of a load or a lot of use better reinforce the end of the receiver tube itself. Standard 2" OD tube in wall thickness to suit your load requirements is standard materials.

It is called "2.52 Trailer Hitch tubing" and is an off-the-shelf item at any good steel yard.

The main special thing about it, other than the size, is that a special tool is run through it to remove the internal burr.

One good, but uncommon, way to deal with the extension issue is to use a Reese Titan V hitch on the truck, and any sort of length of 2.52 you might want. The Titan V was designed with this in mind.

You should be able to get what you need from any local metal supplier but if you only need a bit any decent sized welding shop will have it in stock . A little phone time and I think you will have what you need at the best price . Remember to ask for the price of it cut as some places add a flat fee for cutting .
