TAHLEQUAH -- A Cherokee County man was killed Saturday when his homemade cannon exploded, an investigator said Tuesday. The medical examiner's office ruled accidental the death of Howard Chad Asher, 39, of rural Cherokee County. Asher died at W.W. Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah from facial injuries.
Asher designed the cannon, a miniature version of a Civil War cannon, to make noise, sheriff's investigator Bryan Swim said.
Swim said the cannon was not intended to shoot a projectile, but was packed with powder.
A medical examiner's report showed that Asher received perforations to the head and neck.
