I apologize for the duplication. In my defense, let me just say that AMC is my home group and I sometimes include the sister machining group RCM when I think something might be interesting to the mechanically inclined in both groups.

I guess you missed it the first time around.

I've done that before, in a pinch on V8's jogging the starter(coil unpluged), not with the engine running & not on a VW. Hate them pancake natzi bastards specially the front drum brakes, battery under the back seat, gas cap under the front hood- brings back bad memory's from my service station years, pre80 before self serve. Kinda like shifting (w/o grinding) not using the clutch? Its a RPM/speed thing. Sonunds like he's about 400rpm. Like to see that guy do that with say 100 more RPM.=3D Bye bye screw driver, its now in your right eye ball with the belt spinning around your neck :-(

I think we've all done the "Bump the starter" belt exchange dance. Never tried it with the newer serpentine belts though.

Heck I even used to do my bi-weekly valve adjustment on my solid roller cammed big block with the engine running. Warm the engine, turn the idle as low as it will go, put some of those little clips they make for the pushrod side of the roller rockers so the oil doesn't splash all over, and with a box end and an allen wrench to adjust the polylocks - you're in business. Kinda hard on the feeler gages, but they're cheap. LOL

Duplication is generally a good® thing... as long as you conform to the required six month waiting period. ;-)

I did too, thanks for reposting it. Most VW belts need to be re-adjusted when changed.

Yeah, I was going to bring that up, but it might spoil the fun. The old ones had that stack of round shims that you moved from one side of the removable half-pulley to the other, usually from the outside to the space between the two pulley halves when you put on a new belt. The old belts were generally stretched quite a bit.

I still have one of those 1200 cc engines in my garage -- from a '64 bug. Some day I'll get it running again.
