Is it possible to see a flying bullet?

Isn't is the effects on the air surrounding the bullet that one sees, rather than the projectile itself?

Sure you can. During pistol matches I've often watched through a spotting scope and seen the bullets hitting the target - they look like gray streaks.

The big bore boys habitually spot 30-06 shots with the spotting scope. Again the bullets look like streaks.

The secret is to watch them from behind the shooter so you are looking down the bullet path. I doubt that one could see a bullet fired at right angles to you.
