Is it possible to see a flying bullet?

I was at a gun range today with a friend, shooting a 9mm hand gun.When he was shooting, I was standing behind him, watching. After a fewshots, I realized that I may have seen a glimpse of the bullets asthey flew downrange. I watched some more, and it did seem this way, although it was hard tosee them and the barrel flash did not clarify things. I am wondering, if, perhaps, it is known that flying bullets of thatsort of size and speed can be actually seen. i

Sure you can. During pistol matches I've often watched through a spotting scope and seen the bullets hitting the target - they look like gray streaks.

The big bore boys habitually spot 30-06 shots with the spotting scope. Again the bullets look like streaks.

The secret is to watch them from behind the shooter so you are looking down the bullet path. I doubt that one could see a bullet fired at right angles to you.
