Yep, true story. I was saved by my laptop and my ability to find the right regulation. My trailer was almost impounded.

I would expect the sticker goes w/ the truck at _least_ until it is retitled.

Highly unlikely, no. Remember, you're talking commercial here, not personal vehicle.

Yep, the differing regs is what caused a lot of problems for folks owning vehicles like Explorers and Suburbans in Florida. They changed the laws and if the GVW exceeded the limit the vehicle became a CDL required vehicle.

Keep in mind that you will only be insuring the tractor at this time. That means you want bobtail insurance and not a policy covering a tractor/trailer combo. Make SURE you tell the agent this. It will not be cheap because operating bobtail is actually much more dangerous than pulling a load and some companies will not insure you for bobtail operation.

Then once you get all the CDL stuff and decide on a trailer you will need to get insurance on it as well. The cost of that will depend on trailer type (box, flat, tank) what you plan on hauling (scrap, cars, machinery, whatever) and if you will be hauling interstate or not. If you have more than one trailer you will need insurance for each one as most companies don't issue blanket policies unless you are a corporate entity with multiple vehicles.

You may just want to sell the tractor when you find out what it will end up costing you for insurance.

It is not cheap. I got out of OTR a few years ago and at that time my insurance on the tractor was over 3K a year, trailer was over 7K. And that was for the liability part. The load insurance was extra and was based on the cargo.

Don't judge the mileage by the odometer. Look at the upholstery to see if it looks like the mileage is real. Are both seats identical upholstery? The pictures show the driver's seat to be in great condition. Perhaps too good? Have the seats been replaced?

They would not wind the odometer.

I saw the truck today, but I will not take possession until 1/30

With air endorsement.? Up here you have A forSemi transport, B for coach, D for straight truck , G for passenger and light truck - and Z added to each for air brakes. Then there is M for Motorcycle, ML for limitited speed motorcycle, and a few others.

What kind of trailer was it?

Can I get a reduction based on low mileage?

If the frame is equipped with a pintle hitch, yes. And if you remove the fifth wheel the D Z licence here in Ontario would suffice instead of the AZ.

Not unless he carries unowned vehicle insurance - which is NOT common.

Up here you USED to be able to haul your own stuff, but nobody elses stuff, even non-farm without what was then a "public commercial vehicle" licence - which licenced the haulage company - not the truck or driver.

That provision is long gone - along with the PCV licence monopolies. Farm Vehicle still exempts from a lot of things - but don't get caught using it to help a friend move!!!

For the year, blue book pricing likely does not even exist.

The important thing is to NEVER operate the vehicle combination at over the licenced crgvw (Combined Registered Gross Vehicle Weight) and without required licence level and insurance.

His next CV Safety inspection will likely cost him half what he paid for the truck - and the insurance possibly several times his purchase price.

Doesn't make any sense, but that's the way it is in NY.

Was something unusual on the trailer?

Well, I do not know if this is comparable, they are using it daily and it is driven by people who do not know how to drive it.
