Made a pullup bar for my garage

I welded the brackets from 3/16" pieces that I had. Each bracket is supported by eight 1 5/8" screws, going into the garage ceiling joist. The bar is held by 3/16" chain. The bar itself is a military surplus junk "FIXTURE, ENGINE MAIN" that I did not know what to do with.

Now, you just know that someone is going to recognize that and need it...:-)

FWIW it looks to be a hoisting bar, clip the two pins into the brackets on an engine, adjust the hoisting point for balance, and lift.

You know, you could be right. I was wondering just what that fixture could be used for. Still, there are questions: one "arm" is welded, whereas another pivots. Why would that be? At least I found a good use for this piece.

It is most likely an engine hoist bar for jet or turboprop engines. Looks very much like ones I have built for a PT-6 and PW-100 P&WC

Is this a piece of gymnastic equipment or am I missing something here? You weld a few beads, do a few pull-ups, weld some more? :-D

Seems like a lot of work to save the price of a couple of eye-bolts.

It is a "FIXTURE, ENGINE MAIN" whatever that means. Knowledgeable people say that it is like a spreader bar for lifting aircraft engines.

I dunno if ya wanna do pullups on something that swings. Most pullup bars are rigid.

Some people like to do them on hanging bars. My bar doesn't hang but it's made so it will rotate. Not really sure if it helps strengthen my grip or not. Karl

Nice job.

A month ago or so, I made one for my garage. I used 1 1/4" tubing and 1

1/2" x 1/8" flat bar. Hole sawed a hole right in the middle of the flat bar, cut through the remaining 1/8" on either edge with a hacksaw, and TIG welded the tubing in. under $20 including the hole saw bit.

My garage has a low ceiling, but whoever rocked it followed a few rafter bays to provide some extra storage for long things. Turns out my head fits nicely in there to allow chinups. The bar is lagged into adjacent rafters using two 2 1/2" x 3/8" bolts per side.

I definately prefer a bar that can't swing or twist.

Very nice.

I am fine with a bar that swings, as it does not swing much when I actually do pullups.

There is also another reason why I decided to make the bar swing -- this way, when there is sideways force, the screws that hold the brackets would not experience any extra stresses and would not "wiggle out" with time.
