But how do you discover the limits? Speaking for myself, I have had a few 'what was I thinking' Fortunantly, those have declined markedly for me.

NYS has its share of snow this year. The trucks are out, though not sure as many trucks as in past years.

I heard on the radio they are considering raising the tolls on the NYS Thruway cause the revenue is down. Lets see, people are taking the side roads to avoid the toll. Increase the toll, and what happens to the side roads?

Zero income, and the stadiums will shut down, putting more people out of work.

Earlier this week I drove from ME to PA and back to fetch a Mitsui surface grinder. I thoroughly enjoyed the drive through New Jersey, when compared to crossing Connecticut.

That's refreshing to hear. I'm going to guess that you took I-80 or I-78 rather than the NJ Turnpike? Because driving the NJTP is like driving through lower Connecticut: bleak, ugly, and boring. However, the rest stops aren't bad.

What I was referring to in that last message is that NJ, like NY, has increased tolls on its major toll roads so much that it's driven trucks onto secondary roads, to avoid the tolls. I live within a half-mile of one of the worst of them: US 1. Trucks have turned it into a nightmare, because it parallels the NJTP for a long stretch, and US 1 is free of tolls.

The Interstates in NJ are mostly pretty nice by comparison.

BTW, given the thread title, there was a short article in yesterday's NYT about driving in snow, by Swedish rally champion Christian Edstrom: "Driving Tips From 68 Degrees North."

There are no surprises in there but it's nicely written and a fun read.

Yup, I84 -> I-91 -> I-95 -> I-78. The worst of Connecticut wasn't the scenery, but the drivers. I think they're trying to outdo Massachusetts drivers, and succeeding.

Though the drivers seemed saner in NJ (damnation by faint praise), the toll collectors are every bit as surly as those in CT and MA.

When my son was little and we used to drive out to Chicago a lot to see my wife's family, he used to ask me, "why are the ladies in the toll booths so much nicer in the midwest?"

Their booths had bathrooms.
