I saw some idiot in a supermarket try to escape with stolen shrimp. The employees blocked his exit and the police tased him. I like to see employees going that extra mile- although the company probably would rather avoid the liability.
Now if the stores would offer a $250 gift card for anyone catching or stopping a shoplifter or thief...it would surely stop a great deal of the issues
