Psssssst = No cats

I've got one of the versions made by Whammo. Think big rubber diaphragm attached to the big end of the funnel. Small disk with a pull pin attached in the middle of it. Cocking it pulls the rubber into a cyclone shape and firing it exhausts the newly larger volume of air out through the small end of the funnel.

No I'm not in that age bracket (26), an older wiser friend gave it to me to put up on Ebay. Any takers here before it goes up? Dunno what to ask for it, make an offer? It is in slightly rough cosmetic shape, I will email photos to anyone interested.

I think I'll just need to get 12 pairs of welding goggles (6 dogs + 6 cats).

The only think that makes the cats run is the angle grinder. Drill, jigsaw, torch won't do.

Whenever I want to clear my two cats out of my basement to keep them from running outside when I open the door, all I have to do is pick up the air hose. Usually they're gone with the first clink of the blowgun lever. In extreme cases, a short release of air in any direction makes them disappear upstairs for at least 10 minutes.

Are all your cats this way, or will some tolerate the noise?

My cat will not tolerate an air hose, but almost any other noise in the basement is no problem. Including when I'm turning a bowl and wet, sticky wood chips are flying...I have to be pretty careful to comb all the chips out of his fur before he heads back upstairs.

Wierd cat.

Altho, that does seem to be pretty redundant, doesn't it?

Lol..I just remembered something that happened with a little long haired sweetheart of a cat that used to be my shadow (coyote got her, I got the coyote..it was not an even trade..sigh)

I was reloading ammo, using a standard C frame press..and she was in my lap. Looking at something else..I raised the ram and reached for the next case..when I realized she was digging her claws into my leg and there was the faint sound of air escaping. Looking over I saw that she had reached out and had gotten her paw between the shell holder and inside of the press when I raised the ram. There was just enough of a gap not to crush anything..but she was pinched pretty good.

She was mute btw..couldnt make a sound if her life depended on it and the poor little thing was sounding like a gently leaking air hose. I immediately dropped the ram, she pulled out her paw..licked it once and held it up to me for inspection. After making the appropriate noises, she curled back up in my lap and went back to sleep.

One of the most trusting and loving cats I was ever owned by. Thats why the coyote got her. She apparently thought it was a dog, and she loved all the dogs around the place. I think towards the end, she realized the coyote was not trying to play..and she almost made it up on the porch before he caught up with her. The dogs started carrying on, I grabbed a shotgun and caught him shaking her like a rag doll on the front lawn. He broke her neck, she died quick. So did he.

Real men own cats.

Hi folks,

I suggest that the sound of the air hose - a very pure hissing - may be interpreted as a strong form of the hissing sound that many animals make as an agressive warning.

I've known bears to move off if you hiss at them convincingly enough. I understand that to many animals, that hissing sound is just plain unpleasant - like fingernails on a blackboard for some humans. It probably irritates heck our of 'em.

I try real hard to not let someone BEHIND me wih any firearm, but when it happens, I tend to either put my hands to the side or drop like a rock to give me a chance to draw!

Or at least, I'd HOPE that's what I'd do! fight or flight works, but neither is always the right answer! (tongue firmly in cheek, gentlefolk)

Mike

Wad up a plastic bag or paper sack or pick up a broom and ours flee.

Or when the dog is around say "WHO did this!" Zing! They're gone.

I guess there is always the risk of the animal deciding to remove for good the source of the unpleasantness :)
