A friend of mine has been lamenting the lack of readily available means of fitting a power take off to garden tractors that have an engine with a vertical drive shaft. Essentially some sort of 1 to 1 gear to take the power effeciently through a right angle. I think I could make such a thing with a couple of the small gears out of a car differential, but surely there must be outfits that make them? I see lots of reduction gears that go through a right angle, usually employing a worm drive, but if you're surfing the net looking for a supplier of small 1 to 1 right angle transfer devices, where do you look and what would you call the dang thing?

Use a hydrolic pump and motor... Much more control with speed and reverse...
Might even work better with a hydraulic pump and motor. :-)
But you're looking at around a thousand dollars worth of pump and motor to deliver 16 hp to the PTO at 540 RPM. A right angle gearbox, belt, and two pulleys is likely to be much cheaper.
