quick change tool & 9 X 20 lathe

I want to install my Phase II tool post on my import lathe (Jet 9X20) and need a new bolt. Is there a source for this special bolt or should I just make my own. Would rather buy one if it is available and not too expensive.

Thanks

Normally -- the bolt stays with the toolpost, and a new T-nut is fabricated to match the T-slot in the compound.

But your Jet may be one of those without a T-slot, and with a turret toolpost mounted on the compound with a screw.

You have a lathe, and should be able to take some steel stock and turn it into a new bolt (actually, a stud -- a shaft with threads on each end). The threads in the compound are probably metric since the Jet is made in China, and the nut on the top of the toolpost is also most likely metric, as the Phase-II quick-change toolposts are also made in China. All you have to do is to make a stud to go between them.

The real question is whether your lathe has the right gearing to turn metric threads.

Best of luck, DoN.

You might want to check out this newsgroup. It is for owners of 9x20 lathes.

You might want to check your cutting tool height with the P II (series 100) resting on the top of your compound, as the tool height might be above the centerline. If you have the factory 2 bolt compound mounting clamp plate, you might be disappointed with adapting the QCTP to your 9x20 lathe. Here's one fine example of the clamp modification

One method of mounting a series 100 QCTP is to remove some height from the plinth (where the turret sits). This method weakens the compound slide, but some folks have done this. Another method is to make a 4 bolt mounting plate for the QCTP, which can be used in place of the compound (and you'll forfeit the compound feed).

The usual 9x20 toolpost center bolt has a knurled shoulder and is pressed into the compound slide from the bottom. Some owners have made a threaded adapter to mount their QCTPs to the existing center bolt.

An alternative to using shims to set the tool height in a turret toolpost is to make a set of some wedge shaped gizmos like the one shown here

I got my 9x20 quck change tool post set up how I like it.

I can't understand why the manufacturer did this to everyone. The non standard tool post. My small atlas was easier to add the quick change post, than my enco lath.

my 2 cents

My proposed solution is to add a sleeve and extension to the existing stud. Then the Phase II will use the existing stud and extension with the Phase II nut on top.

I hope that works ( I think it will).
