Schraeder valve OD tap

Jan 20, 2004 7 Replies

Hey all. I am wanting to build some custom made valve caps for my Harley. What is the OD thread size, and can I buy a bottom tap, and where??

Thanks Cody

It's a special thread, 0.305 - 32. Here's a link to drawings and specs:

Someone here probably knows where to get the taps.

Last time I heard, they were expensive. You could get a couple of normal metal valve caps, machine the OD and silver solder them into your custom ones. Sort of like making a thread insert.

You beat me to that one John, but I wuz going to suggest JB Weld or some other good epoxy, like he might be making them from aluminum or something else not easily solderable.

The serrations on metal valve caps ought to be plenty good for epoxy to grab onto, and he won't have to wory about screwing up the rubber gaskets inside the metal caps with soldering heat.

Just my .02,

Jeff

Or, if diameter is a problem, go exotic and use the narrower "Presta" valve stems that are common on high-performance bicycles. You will want to keep a commonly-available adapter with the bike so you can top off the air with a Schraeder air chuck.

recently sent me a catalog that has imported 5/16"-32 hss taps (plug, bottoming and taper) for $3.11 each. No idea of the grade or quality though.....
