Shear Clearance

I've got to find out what is wrong with the shear at work Monday. Its been broken since before I started and its sounds from what I've been told that the blade clearance was knocked way out. This is a large heavy duty machine. ten feet wide and were going to be shearing 1/4 thick 8 fooot wide pieces. I''ve looked at a lot of the old posts and the anseres are all over concerning blade clearance. I've set clearance on small manual shears to as close to 0 as possible and small shear dies to .0015 or less but is it more for this

1/4? We may start using thicker material 3/8 or 1/2. I'd like some advice from people with experience with large industrial shears not toys llike in so many of those contradictary old posts. Thanks Rosco

If it is quarter by ten footer likely it is around 5 thou. You really should check the manual. Does this machine have an adjustment for material thickness? Some do. Some not only have quick adjust for the blade gap but also the angle of the descending blade Another of the reasons you should check the manufacturers specs is that often the blade clearance is greater at the ends The bolt torque on the blade bolts is also important. Make??? Model?? Randy

A shear blade manufacturer would probably give you good advice on this subject

I don't have any info right now and the boss said when I asked for the manual he didn't know if we have one. I'm just trying to get a head start and will have all the info I can get later. I haven't had any time to even look at the thing yet. Rosco

3 to 5% of material thickness, depending on hardness.

Is it a new shear or an old one ? Hyd or mechanical ? clearance for a 10 x 1/4 will be .005 to .007 NO LESS. Don't try to adjust it, someone screwed it up. get the manual and start from the beginning, like with a new blade. gary

============ I think you just identified the cause of this problem and most likely many others.
