I am a novice at machining, and I hope someone can offer some advice.
This is a nylon block, about 2" on each side. I have end-milled it such that all sides are parallel to each other, but then I found that the corners are not exactly 90-degrees. The question is how to square the sides using the vertical mill.
I normally use the vice with its bottom surface as the reference (ie place the work piece flat against its bottom plate and then clamp it while applying downward force to the block). This gives me nearly perfect parallel surfaces. For 90-deg surfaces, I attempted to use the clamp edges as the reference, and float the work piece off the bottom surface. That did not seem like a very secure way of attaching the work piece. More importantly, since the height of the clamps are only about
1/2", it was hard to tell whether the clamp and the block are flat against each other. I found that it is possible to clamp the block with a small tilt.
One technique I thought was to align the block's vertical surface to the mill's axis of rotation, and them do the milling to get the 90-deg surface. This would require some kind of attachment that has a straight-edge. I don't know if such a thing exists.
I am doing this on a Smithy Combination Drill/Mill tool.
