A bit of advice: A standard automotive battery won't last long for anything more than occasional (emergency) use of a winch. A few discharges will damage a starting battery. Consider investing in a deep cycle battery.
Right. The other thing to consider is the winch motor locked rotor current. Either a battery or a power supply will have to supply this for a fraction of a second. Not all power supplies can do so, even if they can provide 200 percent running current.
