Dismantling spindle on Herbert High Speed Drill

Mar 31, 2007 0 Replies

I've been overhauling a Herbert B High Speed drill most of which has been straightforward however I'm stuck dismantling the spindle.

The chuck comes off easily with a special 26tpi split nut, under which is a pin faced nut; one special spanner later this unscrews to reveal the bearing.

Tapping gently on the end of the shaft which is driven ejects this bearing by about 1/4" or so but then meets a solid obstruction. Poking around with a bit of copper wire through the grease hole suggests that the top bearing is moving with the shaft down until it hits a the bottom of its recess.

Because the drive shaft is < 0.25" diameter I cannot apply much force safety yet it shows no signs of futher movement (while much treacle like goo oozes out from the bearing)

If anyone knows the secret of how to dismantle this then I'd be very grateful to know!
