I'm looking for a small (say 2"+ swing) but very tough lathe which can whup through those extra-difficult materials like nickel superalloys. Any suggestions?

has a member with a garage full of lathes and mills just around the corner from you.

No and no.
My experience of the society is that if you've a machining job that is beyond the capabilities of youe own equipment, then the other members are always quick to invite you round to use theirs.
There is a very well equipped workshop within a couple of hundred yards of your house, and we went there when we had to manufacture more track for the clubs' 5" outdoor layout.
