loco/boiler design

Stan Bray's book has all the how to but not a lot on design side. Model and Miniature Locomotive Construction The normal comment is to check with your local boiler inspector how they like to work - so you know what they do want.

Personally I cheat and buy the boiler - but it still dos not get the engine built any quicker :(

Any suggestions for a book or books that will equip me to design the boiler and cylinders for my next project, a 3 1/2" but it might end up 5" yet De-Winton. I have Tubal Cains ME Handbook which gets me part of the way and lots of other source material but I need calcs for the boiler inspection. Thick pipe and as many tubes as will fit apparently won't do!

The following may help with boiler design & construction :-

(1) Model Boilers and Boiler Making (Paperback) by K.N. Harris Publisher: TEE Publishing Ltd (31 Oct 2000) Reprint ISBN-10: 1857611144

(2) Model Locomotive Boilers: Their Design and Construction (Hardcover) by Martin Evans Publisher: Model & Allied Pubns. (Dec 1969) [there's a later reprint] ISBN-10: 0853440220

The later edition of Martin Evan's book is :-

There is a set of drawings for a 5" De Winton - I have them at home, but I can't remember who made it, or if there were boiler drawings. I will look tonight and let you know.

I plan to build a 7.25" De Winton and I have a Caradoc boiler for mine.

If you want more info, e-mail me separately.

Cheers

Peter

Cheers Peter - duly ordered!

I take it you have seen the George Henry build ? my link to it didn't work today

but I have most of it archived somewhere. Didn't manage to track down the author as those Autocad drawings might have been useful.
