lube oil

The oil supplied by Myford is Esso Nuto H32. This is an hydraulic oil to iso vg32 spec.

Options are likely to be paying high prices for 500 ml tins through the model engineering suppliers or trawling through oil suppliers who will likely sell you 25 litre drum. Are you a member of a ME club? Perhaps share the buy with like minded myford owners?

I went halves with a mate on 25 litres in 1980 and still have some left, so I've not had to find a source for a while.

When I do run out I'll have to calculate my life expectancy in terms of litres of NutoH32!!!

While we're on the subject of the lubrication of Myfords, anybody know the recommended alternative to Rocol Moly grease, apparently no longer available, for slideways and feedscrew threads.....SAE 30 grade non detergent oil?

Constant-velocity drive shaft grease is a good substitute, or you can buy Molybdenum grease at most motor factors, we have some here branded as "Comma" in 500g tubs at £4 or so plus VAT.

Thanks everybody for those useful bits of advice. In fact , Brian James' reply earlier in this thread has revealed a Myford web page that I had not found through looking over their site. It shows a Castrol Moly grease (Feb 2003) at £4 odd a can. I'll check my local car accessory shop next week...I'm off Myfords, who can't be bothered to answer e-mails regarding support for a new machine I bought from them last year, a Connoisseur. I doubt they will be in business in five years if their present disregard for their customers continues. Rant mode off!

Myford's aren't really into email. Try phoning them up and they are more helpful.

They may also be on holiday at the moment. They still have a summer shutdown.

Nuto (H) 32 is a hydraulic oil. You can probably use any ISO 32 general purpose hydraulic oil.

Mark, do you recommend multi-gradefor the more modern myford with a felt wick to feel the mandrel bearing? I'd have thought them to be too viscous to work properly? maybe you have the gravity feed type oilers?

I've got a Southbend lathe, which feeds the oil onto the bearings via a felt wick (total loss system). After a long discussion on rcm a few years ago the advice that I got was to use mobil1 synthetic oil, which I have been using since. Seems to work OK (the lathe still goes round!).

AFAIR, ISO 32 hydraulic oil and SAE 10 light machine oil from my local supplier both come out of the same tap.
