That means you will be noticing a blown lamp ten times more often than a room with a single bulb in it. In my opinion only, dimmers do tend to make lamps last much longer. I suspect the reason is not simply due to the fact that they are run at less than full brightness, but also to the fact that they suffer less thermal shock at turn on. You turn them on, then relatively slowly increase the brightness to full.

What they don't like is to be caught flat-footed with demand outstripping supply and total available installed generating capacity is a very close match indeed to total demand. In order to keep a little 'headroom' they won't sell every watt they can make, only every watt scheduled to be made. They have to keep a 'spinning reserve' in case there's a sudden unexpected event that causes overall consumption to rise. The alternative is to lower supply voltage and ultimately shed load. The total available power in the system is finite and fixed at any given time and the only parameter that can be varied relatively quickly is voltage (without load shedding). So, they do try to sell all the power they can but what they can't do is sell power they haven't actually got available.

On a cold winter's night, what will happen if a couple of 500MW sets have a boiler tube failure? Will some unlucky souls get their power turned off or will the grid as a whole see a slightly reduced voltage? My money's on the second possibility. In an ideal world, the spinning reserve would take up the slack, but I'm not sure just how much of that is left these days.

Ikea only does screw fit bulbs AFAIK

They certainly have BC (we're using some), not so sure about SBC though. Certainly worth a look if you're unfortunate enough to be in one of their stores

It's true that a good proportion of the fittings they sell have screw fittings, & screw fitting lamps were pretty rare here until IKEA arrived.

Hi Tim, the best value in IKEA is to go in at 9am & get your breakfast for £1. Unlimited free coffee until the store opens at 9.30. I then go straight to the till & buy a load of AA batteries for my cameras. They are the best value you can get.

I blame Ilea for all this. We never had a problem with over voltage or for that matter over anything when we were using Lucas lamps. Just select the correct illumination from the three position switch, off, glimmer and flicker and you are away.

For the EE's on the list perhaps you can answer this one?

Given that light travels at 156,000 miles a second or minute ?[ bloody quick anyway ] how was it possible to run over the main beam on my

1954 BSA B31 flat out at 70 mph?

Apparently Lucas petitioned Parliament in 1949 to get Ohms Law repealed but had to drop the action as there was too much resistance.

More to the point, how was it possible to get a 1954 BSA to do 70 MPH?? The photons in the main beam were probably so gobsmacked they slowed down to take a look...
