modelling hierarchy

Hi all,

I want to create datum curves and boundary blends that are shared between multiple parts, to create intersection curves, swept protrusions and the like.

So the curves and the quilts are on top of a hierarchy that steer the shape and the position of subordinate parts.

Is that at all possible ? If not, is it possible in other parametric software ?

I seem to remember this was discused in a recent thread. Your refering to top down design - creating a parent model from which all others are controlled.

Using Insert>shared data>copy geometry from other model... you can bring external curves/datums/surfaces into the child model which is referenced back to the parent and use it as a framework for your subparts. Use the default coordinate system to make assmembling a breeze.

When you get into surfacing and more freeform modelling this is the only way to ensure fit between parts. The classic example I use with my students is creating the rubber grip laid onto the handle of a battery drill. The surfaces from the drill handle are imported to the grip model.

I think if you googled 'master model', you'd find what you're looking for. PTC probably has a bunch of stuff.

You can...

_ Use skeleton parts (AAX required)

_ Place the features in a regular "master" part (or in assy as assy features) and copy the geometry using various methods. (You might read thru the thread "Skeleton Model", Andrea Willans, 4/8/04.)

I don't have AAX and use the second method, though am not familiar enough with Pro to be well versed in all the methods and variations that may be possible.
