Review of the Micro Scrappy Custom RC Airplane Build

The creation of this Micro Scrappy radio-controlled airplane began with the idea for a custom-built RC craft. The maker constructed this specific aircraft using foam board, tape, and composite materials. It incorporates an electric motor setup and distinctive orange-wheeled landing gear. The operation of the plane was controlled using a white handheld RC transmitter fitted with a black neck strap.

During a flight test, the maker rushed the takeoff from an asphalt path. The plane accelerated and then lifted off the ground. The build banked hard to the left, subsequently crashing nose-down into the grass several meters away. Visible damage on the craft included a severed wing section and loose wiring. The linkages in the tail snapped, which the maker held on with the tail wheel link.

It is noted that the Micro Scrappy is not described as the smoothest flyer. The maker's attempt to push the takeoff while needing to pull out when going left led to the crash. The plane was flying under 4s batteries during the test. One open question raised by the maker was whether the Draco offers anything better or different than the 4s batteries. The build represents a unique, if challenging, project.

I think using the tail wheel link to secure the snapped linkages was clever. It is a resourceful way to maintain structural integrity in a damaged tail assembly, even though it is a temporary fix.

For future versions, the maker should consider using different materials for the tail linkages. If the current setup snaps easily, switching to a stronger material could prevent future failures during high-stress maneuvers.
