Summary: People will want to enhance their physical and mental abilities with genetic engineering and mechanical implants as those technologies become available. They'll want to become, in short, cyborgs. Others will want to create wholly independent and sentient AI. A group of academics and activists are already fighting to make sure these posthuman or transhuman newcomers are allowed to come into being, and to particpate in human society if they so choose.

But at what point could the debate between these futurists and the cautious groups they deride as "bio-Luddites" turn into a violent struggle?
