Lower cost alternative to Sick laser scanner sensors

Is there any (lower cost) alternative to Sick laser scanner sensors?

You may want to look into the NorthStar system by Evolution Robotics (www.evolution.com). It gives you X/Y positioning, as well as heading information. Might be a good alternative.
