I have seen some really inexpensive taiwanise data acquisition cards based on the 8255 and th 8253 I/O chips.

You might look at Adlink boards. I think they are rep'd in the US by
I have seen references to 8253's and 8255's in the Adlink C library header file, but I don't know specifically which of their modelshave them. I used a different one of the Adlink boards and they are Taiwanese, the boards work OK and the support is really weak.
